Social Anxiety and Selective Mutism Have Control of My Life!

Part 1 of 4, the story I promised I’d tell…

anxiety, Brett, mute, mutism, phobia, Saruwatari, saruwatarib, selective, shy, shyness, social

I’m 18 and had extreme SM between the ages of 4 and 17.

Now I’ve pretty much overcome it and people don’t even consider me to be shy anymore.

Don’t lose hope, because my dream came true and so can yours!

Really? I was debating that at one point, but I never know quite what to believe when I go off looking at things with so many similar characteristics :p

I know what you mean. :)

It sounds completely crazy, but I actually think I was told way too much when I was a kid and a young teenager that I was “oh so good” or “one of the best” in this and that. I have actually had people fighting over who got to sit next to me in the school bus.
Normally one would think that that would only boost the self-confidence, but I think it has led me to be extremely self consious, wanting nobody to be mad at or dislike me and now I am suffering from (mild) SA.

Just can agree with you. I also had SM between the ages of 5 and 18. But you have to work on it, to stand against your fears.
But now, people can hardly imagine, that I was so “shy”.
It’s not easy, but it’s possible, if you really want to! Don’t give up!

Luckily, I can disagree with you in that point. I always thought, I was extremely shy, I’ve never known a name for this disorder. A few days ago I’ve heard for the very first time of SM. I never was in therapy because of it. I suffered on SM from 4 – 18, but someday I overcame it. Now I’m talking as every other human. Don’t have problems any more.

i hear you. at 31, i’m still suffering from social anxiety. i also battle a.d.d. Work on your strengths, man. I lost my fiance and best friend back in highschool. i never recovered. i’m sure you’re stronger than i am.

Can anybody find a real difference between SM and Asperger’s syndrome. I have been diagnosed with AS,even though there are certain things about it I don’t relate to. I can relate completely to SM.

I’ve been watching your video’s man… I know that you posted many of these two years ago, but have just come across them in recent months. I completely hear you… I was diagnosed with selective mutism at the age of 4 and have had major social anxiety problems throughout my life.

  19. #19 by craggy08 on November 17th, 2009

I used to have selective mutism from age 3 till age 11 it was hard and i still don’t like social situations today, i’m currently 15 and have been talking 4 years and a half, its still really hard – but i’m getting there.

    How?

  21. #21 by cfreak99 on February 6th, 2010

Some of what he describes i can recall to myself. I wouldn’t say im an extreme case of any chance but the feeling of being quite in some social situations has been nagging me through the years (23 now). I lost my brother at the age of 6 and it wouldn’t surprise med if it put my perspective of life at a whole new turn. Anyhow, it’s a really interesting diagnose and i find it very comfortable to know that there’s a reason for what’s been going on and still does.

Well done for finding the courage to make these videos. I can relate a lot to what you say. I used to really struggle to talk in groups of people, or just to people in general. Once it took me about a month to phone someone just to say thank you because I borrowed something from them.

Bully from school and work is a bitch, and it creates my social anxties. People who don’t understand call you ignorant. What do they know. Only a few tutors not all cause me social discomform by telling me off in the classs for even asking for help and advise. Life SUCKS ; (

  25. #25 by egyptian4life on March 24th, 2010

mmm bro dont worry social anxiety like anything that gives you trouble…its tends to go away when you fight it. try going out and starting random conversations with people. and go for long walks and try to play sports and go out to movies and such even if ur short on money do outside activities and dont cost too much money like riding a bike or roller skating or something. and try to get a g/f and try to think that’s SA and SM are a disability and they’re not by any chance ur fault
