After my first visit with my psychiatrist, I found out what medication I would be taking. It’s a classic drug called Imipramine. It was one of the original most-effective medications used to treat depression. It is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). TCAs tend to have more side-effects than other antidepressants. I was a bit uneasy about taking it because of the research I had done on it. Ineffective for social anxiety…lots of side-effects–this didn’t sound appealing to me, especially since I didn’t want to take medication in the first place. Having taken Imipramine for about a month, I can say that it did have quite a bit of side-effects for me, with the most obvious being dry mouth. After two weeks or so, most of them are completely gone. It made my overactive adrenaline rush slow down. It made me more relaxed overall, but I wouldn’t exactly say it was my “golden ticket”.

beta blockers are supposed to eliminate all anxiety whatsoever. They are used by musicians and performers on a regular basis. I dont know how to obtain them and i dont know the side effects involved with them though.

If you don’t mind me asking, what daily dosage of Imipramine (tofrinal) did your doctor prescibe for you?
#9 by WhirledSol on December 3rd, 2008
Beta blockers are good for the physical manifestations of anxiety. However, they are not the best choice for anxiety. They also contain a lot of interactions and side effects.

I’ve realized that my anxiety dramatically decreased when I went to see the doctor. I’ve come to the conclusion that doing so relieves it temporarily because you are treating the issue, you feel more hopeful that it will go away, and you are near professionals who are able to help you. This helps the anxiety temporarily. Good luck with the TCA. Remember that it takes time and each medicine affects each person differently.

I’m taking lofepramine/gamanil which is also a tricyclic.
Having strange side effects such as physical weakness etc…
I’m having suicidal thoughts so I’m beginning the process of reducing the dose. On my own really.

Interesting to prescribe that one first. I’m not qualified in prescribing meds so they might have had their reasons. Such as interaction problems if you were taking something else incompatible with say, SSRIs. I stick to psychological methods, so I’m never overly clued up on what’s what with meds, but I know many people in the U.K. seem to be prescribed Citalopram, Escitalopram, or Paroxetine as a first line med for SA, or maybe beta-blockers, but it still varies a lot.
